Ancient Panjakent
Ancient Panjakent is one of the clearest archaeological windows into Sogdian Central Asia. The low ruins do not look spectacular from every angle, but their importance is high: they belonged to a city of merchants, craftsmen, temples, houses, and wall paintings.
The site is best visited with context. A guide or museum stop before the ruins helps translate the foundations into a living city plan. Without that context, it is easy to underestimate what the place represents.
Use the visit to connect Panjakent with the Zarafshan Valley, the Fann Mountains, and the cultural world that stood between Samarkand and the highlands.
