Tours to Merv, Turkmenistan
Mary is the regional base for visiting Ancient Merv. The modern city is useful for hotels, transport, and logistics, while Merv is the historical reason most travelers come to the region.
Merv is an ancient city listed by UNESCO as the State Historical and Cultural Park "Ancient Merv". The source page notes that Merv is mentioned in the Zoroastrian Avesta around 500 BC as an important urban center, and that in the 12th century it was said to be one of the most populated cities on the planet. The city was conquered by Arabs, Turks, Mongols, and Uzbeks, and today several separate walled parts remain, each built and abandoned at different times.
UNESCO describes Ancient Merv as the oldest and best-preserved of the oasis cities along the Silk Road in Central Asia. The remains span about 4,000 years of human history, with visible monuments especially from the last two millennia. UNESCO's longer description highlights Erk Kala, Gyaur Kala, Sultan Kala, the Mausoleum of Sultan Sanjar, Buddhist remains, mosques, fortifications, and the way the oasis cities influenced Central Asia and Iran.
How to Plan Mary and Merv
Treat Merv as a landscape, not a single restored monument. The archaeological park is broad and exposed, so transport, water, sun protection, and a guide make the visit easier to understand. Mary is best used as the overnight base before or after the site, especially when connecting Ashgabat, Merv, Turkmenabat, or longer Turkmenistan routes.
