Matniyaz Divan Beghi Madrasah: a late Khivan façade with confidence

Some monuments in Khiva win attention through scale. This madrasa wins through clarity. Built in 1871 by the minister Matniyaz Divan Beghi, it stands east of the Muhammad Amin Khan Madrasa and faces that famous complex with quiet confidence.

Its high portal with a pentagonal niche, blue-and-white Khorezm majolica, side arches, corner towers, and careful symmetry make it a good example of late Khivan taste: formal, decorative, and very sure of its own façade language.

This stop works well for travelers who enjoy the finer distinctions between Khiva’s many schools and façades. It is not the most dramatic site in the city, but it is a useful one. It shows how Khiva continued building learned architecture deep into the 19th century with a refined regional style that remained recognizably Khorezmian.

In route terms it pairs naturally with Muhammad Amin Khan Madrasa and Kalta Minor, creating a strong western-sector scholarly sequence. Short stop, clear identity, good reward for attentive walkers.
