Climate in Uzbekistan: seasons, water and climate change
Uzbekistan is one of the driest countries in Central Asia. Its climate is sharply continental: summers are long, sunny and hot; winters can be cold, especially away from the south; spring and autumn are the most comfortable seasons for travel. This simple description is useful, but it is not enough. Precipitation is seasonal. Most rain and snow falls from late autumn to spring, especially from November to April. Summer is usually very dry. This creates a strong agricultural rhythm: winter and spring moisture supports natural pastures and mountain snowpack, while summer crops depend heavily on irrigation. Climate history shows warming. Instrumental records across Central Asia show rising average temperatures over the twentieth and twenty-first centuries, with more frequent hot extremes. In Uzbekistan this trend is especially important because the country already sits near the dry edge of viable rain-fed agriculture. A small increase in average temperature can produce a large increase in evaporation, crop water demand, urban heat stress and pressure on reservoirs.
Climate, population and the economy
Uzbekistan's population is concentrated where water and soils make settlement possible: river valleys, irrigated oases, the Fergana Valley and foothill zones. This is not accidental. Water availability

The sea split, retreated and left behind salt flats, abandoned ports and polluted dust sources.
The consequences were ecological, economic and human. Fishing towns lost their main industry. Salinity destroyed aquatic ecosystems. Exposed seabed released salt, pesticide residues and dust into nearby settlements and farmland. Karakalpakstan and the lower Amu Darya region suffered health, employment and migration pressures. The Aral Sea is therefore not only a landscape of dramatic photographs; it is a reminder that water policy, agriculture, climate and public health are connected.
Recovery is uneven. The northern part of the Aral Sea in Kazakhstan has seen partial recovery after dam construction, while the southern Aral Sea near Uzbekistan remains severely degraded. Uzbekistan has also supported planting saxaul and other desert vegetation on the exposed seabed to reduce dust, but the original sea cannot be restored simply by one project. The lesson for the future is efficiency: every cubic meter saved upstream has social and environmental value downstream.
Global warming and future risks
Global warming is likely to make Uzbekistan hotter, drier in practical effect and more exposed to extremes, even if total annual precipitation changes only modestly. The impact is amplified by aridity: when air is hotter, water demand rises even without a sharp fall in rainfall.

Cotton cultivation and recent reforms
Cotton shaped Uzbekistan's modern environmental history. For decades, the country was locked into a water-intensive cotton system that expanded irrigation across dry land and contributed to the Aral Sea catastrophe. Cotton also influenced rural labor, state planning, export revenue and land use.
In recent years the role of cotton has changed sharply. Uzbekistan has reduced the dominance of raw cotton in the economy, ended the old state quota system, expanded textile processing, diversified agriculture and promoted more mechanized harvesting. The area under cotton has been cut from the peaks of the old system, and many farms have shifted part of their land to fruit, vegetables, grain, fodder and higher-value horticulture. This does not mean cotton has disappeared. It remains an important crop, but it no longer defines the whole agricultural strategy as rigidly as before.
The climate significance is clear. Cotton requires irrigation during the hottest months, exactly when evaporation is highest and river flows may be under pressure. Reducing cotton's dominance, improving irrigation efficiency and moving more value into textiles can reduce water stress while keeping rural income in the country. Travelers do not need to become climate scientists to plan well, but climate awareness improves the trip. Choose spring or autumn for city sightseeing. In summer, start early, rest in the middle of the day, drink water regularly and use shade. In winter, expect cold mornings and occasional snow or frost, especially outside the south.
