Ascension Cathedral
Ascension Cathedral is one of the easiest and most rewarding stops to include in a first Almaty tour. It stands in the center of Panfilov Park, close to walking routes through the old city center, and its bright domes are visible from many nearby streets.
The cathedral is not only a monument. It is an active Russian Orthodox church, visited by local worshippers on ordinary days and especially on major holidays such as Orthodox Christmas and Easter. That living function gives the site a different atmosphere from a museum: visitors should enter quietly, dress respectfully, and allow space for people who come to pray.
The best way to visit is to combine the cathedral with Panfilov Park, the Memorial of Glory, and nearby city walks. It is a compact stop, but it helps explain Almaty's layered identity: imperial-era settlement, Soviet memory, religious continuity, and contemporary city life all meet in one green central space.
