Shymbulak Ski Resort
Shymbulak, also spelled Chymbulak, is the best-known mountain resort near Almaty. It lies above Medeu in a picturesque gorge of the Trans-Ili Alatau, at about 2260 meters above sea level, and is one of the easiest ways to feel the mountain side of the city.
There are two main ways to reach the resort: take the cable car from the Medeu area or use the mountain road by car when access conditions allow. The cable car is usually the more memorable option because it turns the transfer into part of the excursion.
In winter, Shymbulak is used for alpine skiing, snowboarding, lessons, and mountain recreation. The slopes range from easier areas for beginners to longer and steeper routes for experienced skiers. In summer, the resort remains useful for cable-car rides, trekking, fresh air, viewpoints, and adventure activities such as paragliding or buggy routes depending on availability.
Shymbulak combines naturally with Medeu. For many first-time visitors, this pair is the most efficient mountain excursion from Almaty.
