Tours and Excursions in Almaty

Almaty is the largest city of Kazakhstan and the country's capital until 1997. Many Kazakhstan travelers still call it the Southern Capital because of its size, cultural weight, business life, and mountain setting in the south-east of the country.

For visitors, Almaty is both a city destination and a practical base. From here it is easy to build routes to Medeu, Shymbulak, Kok Tobe, Charyn Canyon, Kolsai Lakes, Bishkek, and longer cross-border programs toward China and Kyrgyzstan. The city has a mature tourism infrastructure, with international hotels, small guesthouses, restaurants, guides, transport, museums, and year-round excursions.

Visit Almaty, the official tourism portal of the city, describes Almaty as a city at the foot of the mountains, the birthplace of apples, and the gastronomic capital of Kazakhstan. UNESCO also lists Almaty as a Creative City of Music, a status the city has held since 2017. That combination explains the city's appeal: mountain air and cable cars are close, but so are theatres, museums, bazaars, cafes, parks, and evening cultural life.

History of Almaty

In 1854 Almaty was founded as Fort Verny, a frontier settlement of the Russian Empire. The city's deeper history goes further back: old settlement layers in this area are often connected with the medieval and Silk Road landscape of the northern Tien Shan. In 2016 Almaty marked its 1000th anniversary, and the date was included in UNESCO's calendar of jubilees and memorable dates.

This long history is visible in the city fabric. Older merchant houses, Soviet civic buildings, modern business centers, Orthodox churches, museums, and parks sit close to one another. A good Almaty tour should therefore mix the obvious views with slower city walks: the Ascension Cathedral and Panfilov Park, Republic Square, the Central State Museum, the metro, Kok Tobe, and mountain excursions above Medeu.

How to Plan Almaty

Use Almaty as a flexible base rather than a one-stop sightseeing checklist. A short stay can cover the historical center, Kok Tobe, Green Bazaar, the metro, Medeu, and Shymbulak. With more time, add Charyn Canyon, Kolsai Lakes, Issyk Lake, or national park routes outside the city.

The best plan depends on season. Winter gives access to ski and snow activities around Shymbulak. Spring and autumn are strong for city walks, canyon routes, and photography. Summer works well for higher mountain air, but city and canyon excursions should be planned around heat and traffic.
