Medeu Skating Rink
Medeu shows how close Almaty is to the mountains. A short drive from the center brings visitors into a valley of the Trans-Ili Alatau, with cleaner air, pine trees, and the classic high-mountain sports complex that has shaped the city's winter identity.
Construction of the complex began in 1949, and Medeu became famous among athletes because altitude helped produce strong results. Since 1951, more than 200 world records have been set here, which is why locals often call it a "factory of records."
The rink sits over 1600 meters above sea level, and its ice surface exceeds 10,000 square meters. Today it is used for competitions, events, public skating, and mountain excursions. Medeu is also the natural starting point for Shymbulak: combine both in one half-day or full-day route, depending on season and weather.
