Ancient Merv
Ancient Merv is the defining excursion from Mary and one of the great archaeological landscapes of Central Asia. The source page notes that Merv is mentioned in the Zoroastrian Avesta as an important urban center and that in the 12th century it was considered one of the most populated cities in the world.
Merv was conquered in different periods by Arabs, Turks, Mongols, and Uzbeks. Today the site is not a single monument but a series of walled cities and ruins, each built and abandoned at different moments in the history of the oasis.
UNESCO describes Ancient Merv as the oldest and best-preserved of the oasis cities along the Silk Road in Central Asia, with remains spanning about 4,000 years of human history. The archaeological park includes Erk Kala, Gyaur Kala, Sultan Kala, the Mausoleum of Sultan Sanjar, Buddhist remains, mosques, fortifications, and other monuments that show the long cultural sequence of the Murgab oasis.
Bring water, sun protection, and realistic expectations about distances. Merv is wide, exposed, and best understood with a guide who can connect the separate ruins into one historical narrative.
