Ancient Nisa

Ancient Nisa is the strongest historical excursion from Ashgabat. The site lies about 18 km from the capital and preserves the remains of Parthian fortresses connected with one of the earliest and most important cities of the Parthian Empire.

UNESCO describes the Parthian Fortresses of Nisa as two tells of Old and New Nisa. The empire was a major power from the mid-3rd century BC to the 3rd century AD, and Nisa stood on important commercial and strategic routes between east and west, north and south. Archaeological work has revealed richly decorated architecture connected with domestic, state, and religious functions.

Visit Nisa with a guide if possible. The remains are earthen and archaeological rather than heavily restored, so explanation matters. Combine it with Ashgabat's museums: finds from Nisa help connect the ruins with the wider story of Parthian power, trade, and cultural exchange.
